About the Program

Prepare for an entry level Diesel Technician position in the heavy duty truck and heavy duty equipment industries by applying for the Hinds Diesel Technology Academy Program during one of their open enrollment periods: January, March, June, August, and October. Students who enroll in the Hinds Diesel Technician program stand out from the competition because all students work with leading industry experts on industry-comparable equipment, and students receive supervised training so they graduate prepared to enter the workforce. Students receive one-on-one time with their instructors, hands-on training in a variety of specialties, and preparation to join the heavy duty truck and heavy duty equipment industries. Students who have completed the program have gone on to become fleet preventative maintenance technicians, truck or truck engine dealer technicians, or material handling equipment repair technicians.

Hinds Diesel Technology Academy

The curriculum is based on the national standards for certification of medium / heavy truck and construction equipment technician programs according to the Automotive Service Excellence Medium / Heavy Truck Standards (ASE) and the Standards for Construction Equipment Technology (AED). The Hinds Diesel Technology Academy offers three degree options at an accelerated transition pathway of 15 semester credit hours.

  • Career Certificate 33 Semester Credit Hours of Intense, General Knowledge and Hands-On Training.
  • Technical Certificate 48 Semester Credit Hours 
    This certificate is by instructor recommendation only. You will receive up to 15 hours of additional specialized training in conjunction with the career certificate. 
  • Associate of Applied Science 61- 64 Semester Credit Hours
    This degree is a result of the Technical Certificate program in addition to 15 hours of academic coursework.

Career Opportunities

Diesel Equipment Technicians require an education level of a post-secondary Technical Certificate as a minimum but an Associate degree is preferred at most workplaces. The median annual income for diesel technicians is $50,000 at the state level. Job availability includes entry-level technician positions at local dealerships, repair shops for modern trucks and heavy equipment, and positions in the marine industry.  Below is Stribling Equipment and Empire Truck Sales’ average dealership pay scale.

Course Description

The Hinds Diesel Technology Academy is a 14-month consecutive program where students learn to inspect, repair and maintain engines, power trains, hydraulic systems, electrical, air conditioning, and brake systems. Classes begin five times a year: January, March, Summer Semester, August and October.

Admission Requirements

Students seeking admission to this program must meet, interview and test with the Hinds Diesel Technology Academy and Navigator. Prior the interview, the student will be asked to complete an Admission Application that will require an GED or High School and/ or College transcript.
